This is a slightly edited version of an article I wrote on this blog back in 2010. When does vandalism become an archaeological feature? When it’s done in antiquity, of course.
Russian archaeologist, Alexander Belov, has concluded that Ancient Egyptians may have actually invented certain sailing technologies on their own rather than adopting them from other Mediterranean countries as previously thought.
The wonder and awe isn’t found in fantasies of ancient aliens and “high technology” of long lost civilizations -rather it comes with the understanding that we are more than the sum of our parts when we decide to do something together. A fact that our ancient ancestors understood all too well. For better or worse.
